I heard the news of Ted's death only this morning when I got Online Catholics.

I just want to acknowledge my debt to Ted: the example of his life encouraged me to hang in there with the Church and to keep plugging away on Reconciliation, both with the local Aboriginal community, and with the religious right within the Church. Ted was a counter-cultural prophetic figure and an inspiration for so many - a model of the kind of Catholic the Australian community needs.

My sincere sympathy and prayers to you all on the death of your spiritual Father.

Fr Ted's name will always be one with any Australian who struggles to allow the voices of the poor to be heard in the right place, God's heart.

Ted Kennedy was a special person who possessed a uniqueness that set him apart from others. Indeed this was the only possession evident in his life, a life of sacrifice and witness and principle. He was a man who plainly lived his commitment to social justice. He did this not so that others might admire him but because his love for the marginalised in a materialist world expelled any other appetite that could tempt him to self indulgence. The poor, the downtrodden and the oppressed will speak this remarkable priest's name in wonder and gratitude. For the rest of us, the light of his life will urge us on to serve Christ in a more authentic witness. May he rest in peace.
