About Me

I grew up on a small vineyard on an island off the Adriatic coast. I was a neglected and abused child. Animals were my only friends. I watched them in silence as day after day, year after year, they were beaten, used and abused. Their young were hung upside down, their throats cut. When they got old and there was no more use for them, they were thrown alive over the cliff into the sea. These animals and I looked in each other's eyes and understood and comforted each other. I will never forget these beautiful, sad eyes... Many years later, in the middle of a night, walking down 4th Ave, near St Marks Place in NYC, I noticed something moving on a white piece of paper. It was a young mouse bleeding and struggling for his life in a common glue trap, most likely thrown from out the window of one of the million-dollar condos towering above the sidewalk. I placed him and the trap under my coat took him home nearby. I soaking him in sesame oil to free his body from the glue and he went on to live with me until he died of old age... "When it comes to having a central nervous system, and the ability to feel pain, hunger, and thirst, a rat is a pig is a dog is a boy." ~ Ingrid Newkirk
