Occupation | Lecturer in Ethics, Centre for Professional Ethics, Keele University |
Location | Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, United Kingdom |
Introduction | My background is in philosophy having done a BA in Philosophy at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, followed in quick succession by an BA(Hons) and an MA (and almost a PHD give me a couple of months...) In 2004 I became a temporary lecturer at Massey University also in New Zealand and towards the end of 2005 was appointed as a Lecturer in Bioethics in the School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Ulster... So on the other side of the world from home. In 2008 I took up a permanent post in the Centre for Professional Ethics at Keele University in England. While broadly trained in philosophy I have specialised in bioethics and in particular in applying elements of political theory to questions in bioethics. My original interest in bioethics was sparked by my first wife Kerry Anne, who had cystic fibrosis, and whom I acted as primary caregiver for until she passed away in 1999. My present interest in research ethics is sparked primarily from being involved in three Research Ethics Committees and being involved in the construction of research ethics policy at my university.
