Introduction | I worked for 17 years with SMART Technologies Inc as Chief Scientist and Distinguished Developer. When I had time off my job, I would explore the wild places. I mapped caves in Mexico and China, explored slot Canyons in Utah, and climbed mountains in the Rockies. Then one day I noticed that there weren't as many wild places any more. The jungles I had visited in Guatemala were now corn fields. The glaciers I had climbed were now barren rock. My wife Lara and I decided to do something. We are now travelling around the world. We have visited some charity projects to try to understand the problems that we face first-hand. And we are seeing some of the beautiful places before they are gone. We live in a remarkable time. Our generation controls the fate of our planet and the future of our species. The decisions we make in the next 30 years will determine the next 10,000. Will there be wild apes in Africa in 2200? Will there be ice sheets on Greenland? We, all of us, are making those choices today. I hope that our travels will help me learn to choose wisely. |
