I've been remiss in posting about a comic book project called Who Is Rocket Johnson? The anthology brings together numerous Disney artists and directors to help raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Besides looking great, it's for a great cause.

One copy sold on eBay for over 500 dollars, and the rest of the limited print run of 1000 copies were made available at the San Diego Comic Con for $20. If you still want to get your hands on a copy, get in contact with Stuart Ng in California or The Labyrinth in Toronto while quantities last!

Hake's Has Animation on the Auction Block

Hake's Americana and Collectibles's latest auction features some interesting animation and comic-related articles. The current auction features almost 400 rare Disney art collectibles, including some rare Disney artwork, such as a Gustaf Tenggren sketch from The Old Mill and the first Donald Duck model sheet from the short, The Wise Little Hen. There are also Disney picture books and posters: check out the WWI poster of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Art in the lot ranges from Silly Symphonies to more recent features like The Lion King.

While acquiring the Disney artwork and memorabilia is enticing, I thought the Winsor McCay posters and miniatures, Fleischer posters, Jay Ward and Dr. Seuss items equally fascinating. If you didn't blow your budget during the holidays, you can go crazy now.

You have until the end of the month to keep your wallet under lock and key.

Charity Auction 2007: Final Report

The final payments for this year's charity auction are settled and we will be presenting a cheque to The Cancer Research Society for CDN$1440.99.

Bidders paid CDN$1628.72, and after PayPal and eBay fees of CDN$57.74 and US$129.99, a tidy sum was raised for this year's reader-selected organization in just one week.

Bidding was down from last year when we passed the $2000 dollar mark, but 2007 represents the second-highest total in the four years that we have been conducting the auction.

It is particularly fitting that the money was raised for a charitable organization related to cancer research this year. Emru experienced difficulty finishing the tasks for the auction this year due to a mystery ailment in the last two weeks. On Tuesday, he was diagnosed with leukemia (in its early stages) and today he begins treatment. Cancer research and prevention is everybody's issue, as the whole team at fps is being reminded right now. I sincerely thank you for supporting this effort.

Charity Auction 2007: More Books

First things first: the new books that were added to the auction yesterday are seven-day auctions rather than the three-day auctions I previously mentioned. Go check them out.

Items originally listed in the charity auction end tomorrow (Friday). We didn't have time to write about each item, so you may want to take a last look at all of the items on the auction block.

I would like to draw your attention to some items that are harder to find:

The 1926 edition of the 1922 book Animated Cartoons by E.G. Lutz. While you can find this book as reprint, this is as much a piece of animation history as a piece of early animation. J.J. Sedelmaier generously made the first donation to our auction before the last one had ended.

The Art of Disney 2006 Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art exhibition catalogue is a gorgeous book, with reproductions of some remarkable art from Disney's golden age. In English and Japanese. The DVD version of this catalogue and posters from the 2007 Montreal leg of the Once Upon A Time Walt Disney exhibition are also in the auction.

Charity Auction 2007: Pixar Rules!

This year's charity auction features Pixar goodies in almost every category. There are no DVDs, but we figure you have every one already, including the Pixar Shorts Films Collection Volume 1 (or someone has it on your gift list).

Pixar Renderman donated the 2007 edition of their walking teapot and tin, with a little chef's hat as a nod to Ratatouille. This is pretty hard to find, and the starting bid for this item is only $5.

Raincoast Books has donated several Pixar art books, including The Art of Ratatouille and the recently released To Infinity and Beyond! The starting bid for these books are $10 each.

Gary Rydstrom was nice enough to sign a poster at the Platform International Animation Festival for Lifted. The starting bid on another hard to find item is just $5.

Here's your chance to stop watching, and start creating. Softimage and Toon Boom Animation have both donated versions of their software to this year's auction. Toon Boom has provided Toon Boom Express, a value-priced version of Toon Boom Studio, while Softimage has donated the academic version of Softimage|XSI 6 Advanced—it has all the features of Advanced, but it's at a much lower price for students and teachers.

Softimage has also donated promotional XSI "I Want Six" t-shirts.

This year's charity auction includes donations from the National Film Board's library of acclaimed films. We discussed the awesomeness of Madame Tutli-Putli, The Danish Poet and Ryan in the past, and now you can own a copy and give to a good cause.

Steadfast donors 3D Total have donated their annual collections of CG shorts, The Shorts Drawer, for 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007, each featuring the best animation submissions they have received for each year.

The music label Ninja Tune, has donated DVDs of music videos, including animated contributions, in addition to their backlist of Zen TV (featuring Monkmus' Basin Street Blues and Fender Bender videos for Kid Koala, and the Pinball Number Count many grew up with on Sesame Street) and Mr. Scruff's Sweetsmoke videos (animated by Mr. Scruff), they've donated the Coldcut video and remix collection, Sound Mirrors. The duo Coldcut started the Ninja Tune label in the 90s, and for their latest project they decided to leave the reins to a different director for each song of their most recent album of the same name.

The result yielded videos which were almost entirely of the animated variety, and each is very different. My favourites are This Island Earth (Joel Trussell, who also directed War Photographer), Colours The Soul, and the pixillated State We're In.

This year's charity auction begins next week Friday. We've received some nice books, posters, and look what Dark Horse Comics is offering up: A PVC statue from Hellboy Animated of Hellboy (and another of Abe Sapien).

Hellboy was created for comics by Mike Mignola, who also created the comic book The Amazing Screw-on Head. Both comics went on to be adapted for animation. While The Amazing Screw-on Head kept Mignola's signature style, Hellboy Animated opted for a different look, with equally impressive results.

fps Charity Auction 2007: Update and More Voting

We've been quiet about this year's upcoming charity auction, but it doesn't mean we haven't been working on it behind the scenes. Yesterday I tallied the votes that had come in, and you've once again chosen to donate the proceeds from this November's auction to cancer research. Now we're asking for just one more bit of vox populi from you. Head over to the auction page and vote to decide which organization will be the one we'll be writing the cheque out to when the dust settles.

While you're there, you might also want to see our list of auction items, which I've finally gotten around to updating somewhat. Two items of note are a Meet the Robinsons baseball cap, made specifically for the feature animation crew that worked on the film (it says so right on the back), and a gorgeous Art of Disney catalogue from the Tokyo exhibit of the same name. I was going to gingerly scan segments of the book, but Chris Turner did such a great job back in November I decided to just link to his page instead. If you read Japanese (or just like to look at cool images), you can also see more about the exhibit itself on the official page.

While there are some auction items I haven't gotten around to listing yet, there's always room for more. If you'd like to donate something, by all means let us know.

Carl Barks Auction

The Bonhams and Butterfields auction house is selling artwork from the estate of Carl Barks on Monday, June 4th. Public viewings will be held in Los Angeles from June 1 to June 3.

Lot items include art by Carl Barks, including his comic and animation artwork, pin up art and landscape paintings. Also featured is animation art from a number of different productions, including a Charlie Brown special, Shrek and classic Disney films. There is art by various artists for Carl Barks, as well as awards he received for his outstanding work.

fps Charity Auction 2007

Yep, it's that time of year. Though our fourth annual charity auction doesn't kick off until November, it's time for us to ask you to let us know who you want this year's beneficiary to be. In this first round of voting, we keep it simple: just let us know what kind of charity you prefer, and at a later date we'll narrow it down to a particular charity.

We've also started collecting items for this year's auction, and while we've got some nifty goodies lined up, we've only got one listed right now: a 1922 edition of the book Animated Cartoons by E.G. Lutz—one of the earliest books on the technique of animation, and the same title that Walt Disney consulted early in his career. This book was generously donated by J.J. Sedelmaier when we were a few days into last year's auction; if you'd like to donate something to the cause, then by all means let us know.

2006 Charity Auction Report

Well here it is, the end of the line. The payments have been received, Paypal and eBay have their fees, and the total for the annual animation charity auction has been determined. This year's recipient, The Canadian Cancer Society, will receive $2158.07 Canadian (about $1877 US). This is the second year that readers have voted for this charity, and we managed to beat last year's profits by about $800.

Depending on the item you're watching, you have between 14 and 30 hours to bid on an item in the annual charity auction.

Just to recap:

Pre-auction teaser - Software: Before the auction got underway, Emru announced the donation of some of the software tools of the trade, and DVD tutorials designed for users looking for a challenge. He mentioned that 2 copies of each software were donated on the blog, but neglected to include this in the individual listings. So he'll be offering a second chance to the runner-up bidders of these items. All of the opening bids began at 50% of the retail value, just one of the many deals in the auction.

Day 1 - Artwork: For the first time, we had original artwork donated by the artists Dave Alvarez, Steve Rude and Joel Trussell, and each with their own distinct signature styles. It's no secret—we really like their work, so we got kind of goofy when they agreed to participate.

Day 2 - Books: Great animation books and manga were donated. Two of the books, Cartoon Modern and Bone, are both autographed hardcovers donated by the authors.

Day 3 - Polygon Pictures: This year was also the first time an animation studio donated to the auction as well. When people think of CGI penguins in Japan, I'm sure Polygon Pictures' commercials for Shiseido come to mind before Happy Feet or Madagascar. (Polygon president and CEO Shuzo Shiota is also an fps contributor; contributor Jason Vanderhill donated the Science Ninja Team Gatchaman commemorative stamp sets).

Day 4 - Animated Music Videos: Ninja Tune dropped 10 copies each of Mr. Scruff's DVD single Sweetsmoke, featuring animation by Mr. Scruff, and 10 copies of ZenTV, the Ninja Tune video retrospective, featuring notable videos such as Basin Street Blues and the Sesame Street Pinball Number Count remix by DJ Food.

Day 5 - Posters: Full-size posters and mini-posters abound, including posters for Cars, Finding Nemo, Robots and the Ottawa International Animation Festival.

Day 6 - Anime & Manga: There are DVDs, including limited edition boxsets, soundtracks, t-shirts, wall hangings, and manga adaptations. I mean, really: We're mangalicious. Anime-tastic.

Over on Digital World Tokyo, J. Mark Lytle described the charity auction as "nirvana for anime fans." He's not far off. Since its inception, fps has had more anime coverage than any other non-anime-specific animation magazine, and that's reflected even in our auctions.

Let's start with the gem we have pictured here, the limited edition of the seventh and final volume of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig. Not only does it contain the last three episodes of what is arguably one of the best science-fiction shows on television in both Dolby Digital and DTS, it comes with a limited-edition figure of the Major and the third Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex soundtrack by Yoko Kanno. Oh, and did I mention the whole thing is wrapped up in a collectible tin case?

While not as lavish, we're featuring several other DVDs like Elemental Gelade, Kannazuki no Miko, Gun Sword and Kyo Kara Maoh! (God Save Our King) that include "art boxes"—stylish containers for holding the rest of the DVDs in the series—as well as collectible items like pencil boards and figures. We also raided our own shelves to put together some complete series, like New Fist of the North Star, Tsukikage Ran and The Daichis, so you can have your own marathon viewing session the moment you open the box.

PSP owners can tote their anime with them, as we've got four UMDs in the mix: Ninja Scroll, the CGI Appleseed movie, Karas: The Propechy and the first two episodes of Samurai Champloo. If you're into anime for the music, we've also got the soundtracks from Totoro, Spirited Away, End of Evangelion and Metropolis.

Remarkably enough, there's more—quite literally, there are dozens of anime and manga items to be found this year, including t-shirts, wall scrolls and even two sets of Japanese commemorative stamps. With so much stuff and only two days to go, you'd better start exploring the auction page pretty darned quick.

fps Charity Auction Day 4

You may have noticed the anime box sets and Norman McLaren: The Master Edition among the DVDs up for auction, but I would like to take a moment to point out the contributions from Ninja Tune.

It's always difficult to talk about this label and not emphasize their music, but in other ways it's easy: along with auditory pleasures, Ninja Tune has always had interesting videos, and many among the interesting are animated. Two standouts are Kid Koala's Basin Street Blues and Fender Bender, directed by Monkmus.

Both of these appear on the ZenTV DVD, a Ninja Tune video retrospective, and of the nearly three dozen videos, Wagon Christ's Receiver, Amon Tobin's Verbal, Bonobo's Flutter and Pick Up, and DJ Food's Pinball Number Count remix from Sesame Street, number among the animated contributions.

10 copies of this item have been donated for the auction.

Now, it's one thing for a recording artist to write their own songs, but animating their own videos? We also received 10 Mr. Scruff DVD singles for Sweetsmoke, which feature 3 deceptively simple animated videos, animated and directed by Mr. Scruff.

fps Charity Auction Day 3

Thanks to the vagaries of shipping, we got four new items for the auction yesterday that have just been added to the listings. These are all courtesy of Polygon Pictures, the anime studio currently working on the CG television series Akihabara@Deep.

Three of the items—two banks, one women's turtleneck—feature Rocky and Hopper, a pair of rockhopper penguins who for years have been the faces of Shiseido's Superhard Hair Glue. None of these items are available for sale in Japan any longer.

The fourth item is a red t-shirt featuring the husband from the super-silly CG short The Polygon Family, in which a husband comes home late and drunk, and he and his wife fight it out arcade-game style. The shirts were designed by Polygon Family director Hiroshi Chida, and were made for the Polygon Pictures studio.

Just for fun, here are some links to the Rocky and Hopper ads produced by Polygon Pictures, one of manga artist Takehiko Inoue's Anti-Oily Uno ads for Shiseido, and the Polygon Family short. The Anti-Oily Uno ad has nothing to do with the auction, but it's fun to watch. I'd like to see more of Shiseido's animated commercials over here.

fps Charity Auction Day 2

Yesterday, I mentioned that a signed copy of Jeff Smith's Bone Volume One was donated to the charity auction, but there are additional books on the block:

Amid Amidi, of Cartoon Brew and Animation Blast, has donated a signed copy of his book Cartoon Modern, which he will personalize for the bidder.
Animation Art, is up for bid again this year. It is authored by Jerry Beck of Cartoon Research and Cartoon Brew.
Also up for bid is a copy of Animation Unlimited, and an avalanche of manga of all types (Kingdom Hearts is a curiosity in itself, anime characters combined with US cartoon characters).

(In a flurry of cut and paste to get the listings up, Harper Collins was accidentally listed as the donor of Cartoon Modern on eBay. In fact, Amid has been kind enough to donate a copy of the book, published by Chronicle Books.)

Our annual charity auction began today, and Emru is in the process of uploading more listings as I type this. This year's profits go to the Canadian Cancer Society.

This year, we have some original artwork up for auction. Emru mentioned earlier that Steve "The Dude" Rude donated 11 animation drawings from a sequence of his Nexus trailer. The animated short is based on the comic book of the same name that ran in the '80s and '90s and had a number of influences, and it's safe to say one was the Hanna-Barbera action and space adventure-themed shows.

Joel Trussell, who directed two videos I love, War Photographer and, more recently, This Island Earth, donated an original painting. It is already framed with a matte.

Dave Alvarez donated a page from Looney Tunes #106 with Foghorn Leghorn and Egbert. If you enjoy his work on Looney Tunes, you'll love his work on Yenny, his original creation with engaging characters and a demonstration of his love of the female form.

Another cartoonist has made a donation, but you'll find it in the books section. Jeff Smith has donated a signed, sketched-in copy of Bone Volume One in hardcover.

fps Charity Auction 2006 Update: DVD Box Sets, Figures, Software

Head over to our auction page and you'll notice a few more logos near the bottom, representing a trio of new donors: Tokyopop, Geneon and Softimage. Earlier in the week we received a box of Tokyopop goods, including an armful of manga volumes and a Princess Ai t-shirt and collectible doll. There are also a handful of Princess Ai bookmarks we'll be including with the first manga volumes that are shipped out. Geneon has contributed several DVD box sets and starter sets (single DVDs with fancy boxes for the rest of the series, sometimes with extra collectibles), plus Hellsing action figures.

The final contribution should set animators' hearts aflutter: Softimage has also generously donated two copies of Softimage|XSI Foundation, the "personal suite" edition of their complete modelling-rendering-animation tool; Softimage|XSI Foundation has an MSRP of $495, so this is your chance to stock your studio inexpensively.

fps Charity Auction 2006 Update: Get the Word Out

We're still working on snagging all kinds of animation goodness for our upcoming charity auction, but none of this means anything if people don't know about it—so we're asking for your help. While we're putting up posters in our neck of the woods and otherwise publicizing the event, we'd appreciate it if you could do the same. You can download posters in English and French to put up in your local comic store, coffee shop, cinema, or anywhere else that can reach the animation and film fans in your town.

We've also started to create auction-related banners to add to our regular roster. If you already display our banners on your site, then you don't have to do anything; they'll automatically update as we change them. If you don't display our banners, then keep an eye on our auction page; over the next few days, we'll be providing banner graphics and instructions.

fps Charity Auction 2006 Update: Anime, Manga, and Tons O' Software

It's been a busy week. Between 3D Total, Autodesk, e frontier, Marché Clandestin, the Ottawa International Animation Festival, Toon Boom Animation, and a few more trips to our own vaults, we've added several dozen new items: CD soundtracks, DVDs, manga, posters, t-shirts, and even a spiffy coffee mug. However, this time around I'm going to spotlight the software.

The fps readership has always included animators and animators-in-training, so we're quite pleased that Autodesk, e frontier and Toon Boom Animation contributed some of the tools of the trade. All of these will be available to the auction winners as digital downloads for either Windows or Macintosh platforms. Meanwhile, Autodesk has contributed six training DVDs for 3ds Max users.
