30 Days for 30 Years was a 30 day interactive art installation that ran from March 4th to April 3rd in El Barrio, NYC. The Art installation was done to portray “The experience of Puerto Rican political prisoner, Carlos Alberto Torres”. Today April 4th marks the 30th year of Carlos Alberto’s incarceration.

The NBHRN has recreated the isolation of prison. A different participant each day has volunteered to spend 12 hours in a makeshift prison cell, with only a notepad, pencil and book for comfort.

This project also took place simultaneously in four locations: Chicago, New York, Philadelphia and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Carlos Alberto Torres was arrested in 1980, accused of seditious conspiracy and sentenced to 78 years in federal prison.

The National Boricua Human Rights Network is an organization composed of Puerto Ricans in the US with 3 main concerns: (1) The decontamination of the island of Vieques to its people; (2) The release of the remaining Puerto Rican political prisoners; (3) An end to the continuing political repression and criminalization of the Puerto Rican community.

30 Days for 30 Years: A 30 day Interactive Art Installation
176 East 106th Street New York in Manhattan (next to the Fonda Boricua Lounge) and will run 30 days consecutively from March 4th- April 3rd

The National Boricua Human Rights Network is excited to announce the opening of an art installation titled: “The experience of Puerto Rican political prisoner Carlos Alberto: 30 Days for 30 years”

In response to the 30th year of incarceration of Puerto Rican Political Prisoner Carlos Alberto Torres, the NBHRN has recreated the isolation of prison. One participant has volunteered to spend 12 hours in a makeshift prison cell, with only notepad pencil and book for comfort.

The installation will take place next to the FB Lounge 172 East 106th Street New York in Manhattan and will run 30 days consecutively from March 4th- April 3rd. This project will be taking place simultaneously in four locations: Chicago, New York, Philadelphia and San Juan, Puerto Rico. People can stop by and view the cell and participants 12 hours a day and learn more about Carlos Alberto Torres and the other remaining Puerto Rican political prisoner, Oscar Lopez Rivera and Avelino Gonzalez Claudio.

The National Boricua Human Rights Network-NY Chapter is looking for some volunteers for our art installation titled: “The Experience of Puerto  Rican Political Prisoner Carlos Alberto Torres: 30 Days for 30 Years”. Carlos Alberto Torres was arrested in 1980, accused of seditious  conspiracy and sentenced to 78 years in federal prison. April 4, 2010 will mark the 30th year of his incarceration. In response to the 30th year of incarceration of longest held Puerto Rican Political Prisoner - Carlos Alberto Torres - the  National Boricua Human Rights Network has re-created the isolation by the US Government of Puerto  Rico’s patriot. It is also to bring awareness and to send a message to release them.

Why do we need from our volunteers? Well we need people to volunteer to be a prisoner, a guard, making/bringing breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the prisoner, and constructing the actual cell. Keep in mind that the 30 Day Art Installations starts March 4rd, 2010 and ends April 3rd, 2010. If you volunteer to be a prisoner or guard, you will be serving a shift from 8am to 8pm that day. For example if you are a prisoner for a day you will eat and sleep in a life like prison cell for 12 hours.

The 30 Day live art installation will be exhibited at a store front in either Manhattan or the Bronx (location to be determined). This project will be taking place simultaneously in four locations: Chicago, New York, Philadelphia and San Juan, Puerto Rico continuously for 30 days. People can stop by and view the cell and participants 12 hours a day and  learn more about Carlos Alberto Torres and the other remaining Puerto Rican political prisoner, Oscar Lopez Rivera and Avelino Gonzalez Claudio.
  

Another mini project to go along with the 30 Day Prison Cell Project, is a Graffiti-Chalk Project. We want a group of young people to get together and go around El Barrio (and other communities too) tagging up the streets. Using chalk we would write/draw things related to the political prisoners.
