See, that's what I thought, and decided before I wrote the post that I would look it up so as not to look like an idiot. And I couldn't find a single reference to that usage. (And Dad's not around to ask for clarification.) So I concluded that must have been my imagination.

I'm still more of the hippie kind, though. And a quite literal longhair, to Mom's dismay. (Hi, Mom!) A real longhair of the old school would have known what Adagio the Players were practicing Monday night. (I was there to interview a couple of them, which was kind of comical. Bloggers are supposed to get to interview people by sending a list of questions and getting written answers.)

"Long-hair" is one of those terms that has changed meaning. Originally, it referred to classical musicians and music lovers. Lots of the great conductors and musicians, once, wore their hair long. :)

So glad you found a home for your ducks...your story of the ride there makes my heart a little sad though. Even if you do your best not to get attached, it seems there's a little attaching that happens! (at least in my life anyway.)

Dang, that support wasn't meant to be load-bearing... it was supposed to create a peak so that the water would run off, decreasing the load!

Unfortunately, if the tarp isn't taut, it still collects water... not as much as without the support, but the new tarp is bigger and sags more.

I have an old, old Park's Success With Seeds, but that's it as far as seed books in the Delano collection. And a couple videos came in the El Dorado Heirloom box, but I havent looked at those yet. I check the "seed saving bible," Seed to Seed by Suzanne Ashworth, which confirmed my suspicions. Beans should not cross-pollinate normally, and in your small garden, probably the most effective way to prevent insects from causing cross-pollination is to make sure there are plenty of other good pollen sources available to them.

Kale is a biennial... the second summer it'll go to seed. Like most greens, it's not as good when it bolts, though unlike some it's actually still pretty edible even then.

But omigosh, don't pull it when it gets cold. Kale is one of those that gets even better in the cold. It'll stop growing when it really freezes, but if you give it the least bit of covering it'll happily survive and pick right back up where it left off whenever it gets a little warmth.

As far as I know, it'll grow indefinitely, but I should take pictures of my two-year-old stuff: it's a gnarly mess where leaves have gradually been harvested up and down the curly stem, leaving just a leafy tuft at the end. It looks like something out of Dr. Seuss. So you do want to pull old plants and reseed now and then, just like with leaf lettuces and whatnot. But you pretty much never have to do it because of the weather, as far as I can tell.

Ummmm...Kale is a perennial? I had no idea. I've grown it the past two years and at the end of the season, cut off all the leaves and pulled out the stalk before letting the chooks into the garden area. Ooops. I've grown to really love Kale as a green on our salads so will definitely be planting more this year. I'm a little behind you though - haven't even started seeds indoors let alone transferred them outside. On the flip side though, I've just completed a new, HUGE, raised bed so will have more room to grow MORE stuff this year. Yay.

So sorry - our new puppy tore the chest open on one of our chickens. She "laid low" for about a week, and is now happily eating bugs again, although, her chest feathers still lay a little strange. Best wishes with your Damaged Duck!
