As the commander of a two man recon team, the player enters a mysterious sci-fi adventure and a tale for survival in an unknown planet. A routine maintenance operation goes terribly wrong when an alien substance appears and the players passes out, waking up on an alien planet, without knowing what happened. The screams of your partner are indicative that he is in no better shape.

Now, the player has to explore the alien landscape in this upsetting freeware adventure game. With a first-person view from the commander’s helmet, Egress: The Test of STS-417 better evocates the feeling of loneliness and dread. The game features hand-drawn graphics and some 2D animations, using some haunting music to great effect.

The gameplay will be familiar to point and click fans, with an inventory to store items and some puzzles that aren’t particularly demanding. It’s also a nice touch that there are different choices and different outcomes to the adventure.

Another Digipen Singapore creation, Foxglove Copperfield: Robot Hunter is set in a nicely rendered steampunk London from the 18th century, created with the famous Source engine that powered Half-Life 2 and Portal 2. The main character is Foxglove Copperfield, an engineer that has to build some traps to save London from a robot threat.

There are four large levels to complete and even if Foxglove Copperfield begins with just a crossbow that can be used to stun the robots, soon she will find many objects in the scenario that can be used to build traps and contraptions to eliminate the enemies. There’s no need to do any guesswork since the game itself will teach us how to create the traps and the best way to use them.

Mega Man: Day in the Limelight 2 is another great tribute to the famous character created by Capcom and based on the first years of the franchise, meaning that there’s a retro style to the visuals.

The player gets to control 8 different Robot Masters and although at the time of writing not all the levels are included (twelve out of the planned sixteen) in this beta version, it’s a nice taste of what’s to come. There’s a short trial with each character before we get to control each and every one and then it’s up to us to select our favorite and use it along classic platform levels and boss battles. As a fan game, Day in the Limelight 2 successfully ticks every box.

Flip's Adventure was created by the Singapore division of the already famous Digipen University, a place where great free games are being made all the time. In this example, we have a nice single player platformer set in a steampunk universe, where a war between humans and alien robots is raging. The player is Flip, who has to infiltrate the enemy base and install a virus, as well as discovering his true identity along the way. There are twenty levels to explore and many enemies to fight. The game includes an original multilayer function, with the chance of bringing the background area to the foreground by pressing the adequate switches.

Although not revolutionary, Flip's Adventure is another successful creation from Digipen students, offering some solid gameplay and smooth visuals that will entertain players for a while.

Kuriris is a nice and free puzzle game inspired by Tetris and Columns, with the same kind of simple but extremely addictive gameplay. The goal of the game is to make the squirrels eat the chestnuts and eliminate the lines but there are some variations that turn things into a more intricate process.

For one, squirrels may only eat chestnuts in a line. Blocks of ice may remove squirrels from the screen and if two of them fall nose to nose, they will fall in love and earn us some score bonuses. There are other combinations – for example, making a line for removing the chestnuts from the ice blocks – but everything is simple and will take only a few minutes to learn.

Process is a short first-person adventure game developed by TrainYard, a small team of indie developers, that anyone can download for free. The game is set in subway car trains and the story lasts for 20 minutes, the exact time when a disaster will happen, with the train derailing at full speed.

The player has to explore the cyberpunk and industrial interiors of the train, discover what is going on and prevent the tragedy, using a classic point and click interface and using a free 360 view of the surroundings.

The prolific students from DigiPen Institute of Technology created another amazing and free PC game for all of us to enjoy. Deity mixes concepts from games so dissimilar such as Diablo, Torchlight and Batman: Arkham Asylum, blending the isometric perspective from the first two with the stealth action elements from the acclaimed Batman game.

The engine was entirely built from scratch so that the developers could create the dark fantasy atmosphere they hoped for, starring a demon as the anti-hero in search for revenge. The demon has some unique abilities such as using the light to travel undetected by enemies. The entire game is controlled using only the mouse and although the levels become more and more complex, Deity may be completed in about an hour or so. It’s entirely worth your time, not only due to the great 3D visuals but also thanks to the original concept.

Purge

While Electronic Arts still teases us about a sequel to Mirror’s Edge, a team of Spanish students from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra developed Purge, a free game with a successful cel-shaded steampunk atmosphere, not unlike the one seen in Borderlands.

The player’s goal is solely to survive, escaping guards that are hunting him based on the assumption that he’s a terrorist. That isn’t true, naturally, since the city is completely corrupt and Jack, the main protagonist, has to climb all the way up to the towering industrial complex that can be seen in the distance.

The complex world can be navigated pretty much in the same way as the stunning Faith did in Mirror’s Edge, climbing, studying the guards’ routines using glass shards, escaping through air ducts, wall-running and jumping long distances.

Technically Purge is a real delight, with an alluring aesthetic and some great controls. Besides using the keyboard and mouse, players may also opt for a Xbox 360 controller. Purge won’t take long to finish but that can also be considered as a high point, since players will leave it with a smile and memories of a good time jumping and running.

Return of the Triad

Rise of the Triad was a classic first-person shooter from Apogee Software, released in 1995, a time when the genre was getting more and more attention by the day. Sadly, this game never got the sequel it deserved, although in 2009 there was some talk of a contemporary reboot.

Return of the Triad is a total conversion that runs in the freeware ZDoom engine (download mandatory to run this game) and that acts as a sequel, being set 5 years after the events in the original game that led to the destruction of the monastery.

The game is light in story and this is basically a reason to place us in fights against triad members using all the original weapons from Rise of the Triad. The enemies are also the same from the original game, as well as some of the traps. Half sequel, half homage, Return of the Triad is a welcome revisit to a classic of the ‘90s.
